Peak Avant Garde

November 16, 2016

Finally (!) reached peak avant garde this morning at breakfast….

Becks – what is this your listening to?
Me – What?
Becks – This music?
Me – I’m not listening to any music.
Becks – Oh.
Me – That’d be the air compressor a few doors down and the reporting of warfare in Aleppo on the TV outside mixing together.
Becks – Fair enough.

On the Question Of Ascension

November 9, 2016

my dear American friends,

You know I love you all so very dearly. So, here is a little note of hope and inspiration to you all.

No matter what happens this eve, this is a reminder that change erupts from within and it comes from action; our action. Each and every one of us makes choices, moment to moment, and these shape the micro (and gradually macro) environment we find ourselves in.

This very moment, you have a choice, roll over, shy away and be apathetic or actively pursue the changes you want. This is a chance for you to love, respect and debate, to cherish each other and most of all think deeply, with a desire to creating profound futures. Most of all, you must fight for what matters; for equity across race, gender and sexuality and for a quality of living that encourages and nourishes those around you.

I send you all my very warmest from the bottom of the planet.

xo.

In 2015, my friend Jamie Stewart and I were invited as HEXA by curator José Da Silva to respond to David Lynch’s powerful Factory Photographs as part of the Between Two World’s exhibition at the Gallery Of Modern Art. We had the pleasure to chat to Self Titled Magazine about the record and talk track by track about how the project came together.

14,610 DAYS

July 4, 2016

So, here I am 14,610 days later on this wonderful planet. Please forgive me for a couple of paragraphs of ponderance.

This is a little of what I have been able to glean from my time so far.

The world is full of coalescing plains of possibility. They have differing atmospheres and densities, but all of them are complex, beautiful and uncontrollable. If they are to be meaningful to us, they require persistent investigation and a willingness to desire (and cherish) the incidental. This is what keeps it interesting, and moreover what keeps us interesting.

We have the capacity to do so many things. To make profound changes from the smallest of actions. Many of these require us to be present and are not easy, but in our application to these challenges, vast and deep oceans of experience present themselves to us. This is the richness that feeds us day after day. It’s how we become more than we were yesterday and how we imagine what we might become in the future.

Lastly….

There is nothing more brave (and valuable) than to love and respect those around us.

I am very appreciative to be where I am and fortunate to be loved by people who make my everyday pure magic.

xo to you all.

Brunhild Meyer Ferrari

Last year I had the great pleasure to meet and listen to the work of this astounding women, Brunhild Meyer Ferrari. She is a true inspiration. She also very kindly wrote the liner notes for my Approaching Nothing edition.

APPROACHING NOTHING…

Approaching Nothing…

In the late 1960s, French composer Luc Ferrari and his wonderful partner in crime Brunhild Ferrari visited Vela Luka on the island of Korcula. It was a fruitful summer and from this time the legendary composition ‘Presque Rien’ was born.

In 2012, my dear friends Petar Milat, Leila Topic and I were discussing this piece. Petar, whose family hails from the island, suggested a commission for me to visit Vela Luka and make a ‘response’ of sorts to Mr. Ferrari’s work. Arriving in early autumn 2013, I decided to approach the ‘nothingness’ of Luc’s ideas and capture Vela Luka on the brink of the next season almost 50 years after his recordings were made.

I found the last cicada begging for sun and discovered the wonderful and unique accents of the local people. I heard those same motor boats pushing out to sea carrying local fishermen to their daily rituals in the sea. It was one of the most enjoyable recording trips I have had experience in a great many years. It also was the first chance I had to deeply explore my theoretical framework of relational listening, which is the foundation of the method by which these recordings was made.

Upon listening my Approaching Nothing composition, Brunhild Ferrari kindly wrote me a note “I was deeply touched when I listened to the piece, it had such atmosphere. Their were sounds I could recognize and I could essentially smell that special place once again. My memory was consumed with everything about Vela Luka.” It was a beautiful reminder to me of the power of sound and how it resonates across time.

It’s with great pleasure I announce the release of this piece on the fine French imprint Baskaru. My thanks to Traianos Pakioufakis for his amazing design and to Eric at the label for all his support and energies. Special thanks toPetar Milat, Leila Topic and Brunhild Ferrari without whom the piece would not have come to pass.
